During college football season, the entire city of Los Angeles knows what it means to be a Trojan. On game days, the nearly 100,000 fans that make Memorial Coliseum a madhouse get to experience what it means. Thousands of alumni and fans around the world know what it means. However, there is no one answer to explain the feeling.

What It Means to Be a Trojan: Southern Cal’s Greatest Players Talk About Trojans Football by Steven Travers explores what seems to be a simple question – What does it mean to be a Trojan? One person or one phrase cannot answer that question because so many different emotions encompass the true Trojan spirit.

Pete Carroll knows exactly what being a Trojan is all about. Not only is he the current head coach, but he also had the opportunity to witness a game firsthand as a fan in 1969 when ‘SC was playing archrival UCLA for the conference championship and won in the closing moments. From that day on he knew what the “spirit of Troy” was all about.

The greatest Trojan players and coaches from the 1940s to present day were called upon to express why they are so proud to be a part of the storied tradition that is Trojan football. Some of the players who shared their insights into their college careers at USC include:

-Frank Gifford
-Jim Hardy
-Craig Fertig
-Tim Rossovich
-John McKay
-Clay Matthews
-Keith Van Horne
-Manfred Moore
-Mark Carrier

What It Means to be a Trojan brings together all of their stories, as told by the most outstanding voices of Southern Cal’s program and guaranteed to enhance your passion for Trojan football. It’s not just one tradition, one season or one particular game – it’s the stories coming from the players who made the magic happen over the decades that capture the true essence of playing for USC.
