During college football season, the entire community of Blacksburg, Va., knows what it means to be a Hokie. On game days, the more than 66,000 fans that make Lane Stadium a madhouse get to experience what it means. Millions of alumni and fans around the world know what it means. However, there is no one answer to explain the feeling.
What It Means to be a Hokie: Frank Beamer and Virginia Tech’s Greatest Players by Mark Schlabach explores what seems to be a simple question – What does it mean to be a Hokie? One person or one phrase cannot answer that question because so many different emotions encompass the true Hokie spirit.
Legendary football coach Frank Beamer indeed knows what being a Hokie is all about since joining the Virginia Tech squad in 1987. After leaving his head coaching position at Murray St., Beamer became the head football coach at his alma mater and built a powerhouse program that is consistently among the top in the nation.
The greatest Virginia Tech players and coaches from the past six decades were also called upon to express why they are so proud to be a part of the storied tradition that is Hokie football and give fans an inside look on their college careers in Blacksburg, including:
• Michael Vick – Vick didn’t want to be compared to Donovan McNabb, so he chose Virginia Tech over Syracuse.
• DeAngelo Hall – Hall’s high school football coach was a punter for Virginia Tech and took the team to summer camp in Blacksburg.
• Bryan Randall – Randall found it difficult to live up to the expectations from following Mike Vick as a Hokie quarterback.
• Will Furrer – Furrer worked through a brutal knee injury to become the Hokie leader in career pass attempts and completions.
• Don Strock – Strock was recruited by other east coast schools to play both football and basketball before choosing Tech for football.
