THEN ROY SAID TO MICKEY: THE BEST YANKEES STORIES EVER TOL
There are countless stories about the New York Yankees, but not from the perspective of switch-hitting outfielder Roy White. White is the only player to connect the Mantle-Berra-Ford dynasty with the Martin-Jackson-Steinbrenner championships.
Then Roy Said to Mickey: The Best Yankees Stories Ever Told by Roy White with Darrell Berger (accompanied by an exclusive audio CD featuring an interview with Roy White) provides brand-new insight and unique anecdotes from the viewpoint of White and his teammates, from the bush leagues to the World Series including:
× What Yankee could have played forward for UCLA and John Wooden?
× What happens when a switch-hitter faces a switch pitcher?
× Why did Billy Martin start wearing cowboy boots?
× Whose bat did Bucky Dent use to hit his famous homer?
× How did a burrito cost Joe Pepitone the Texas League batting crown?
White heard and witnessed countless stories over the course of his Yankees career that spanned from 1965-1979. From the prosperity of the 1960s to the tragic decline of the late '60s and early '70s to the championship rise of the Bronx Zoo; his telling insider knowledge will stump even the most seasoned Yankees fans.
From old-school to modern day, Then Roy Said to Mickey makes for a fascinating read that Yankees fans of all ages will both enjoy and remember for years to come.
About the Authors:
Roy White was born in 1943 in Los Angeles, California. He signed a contract with the New York Yankees shortly after finishing high school in Compton, California, and played his first major-league game in 1965. He began his career as a second baseman but found success in the outfield, where he became one of the best at patrolling the vast left field at Yankee Stadium. A switch-hitter, he homered from both sides of the plate in five games. He was a versatile hitter, who batted everywhere in the lineup. He was an American League All-Star in 1969 and 1970. He played on the World Series winners of 1977 and 1978, and was on base for Bucky Dent¡¯s famous homer. Following his retirement from the Yankees in 1979 he played three seasons in Japan. He now splits his time between Florida and New Jersey. He often participates in Yankees fantasy camps in Florida and the annual golf tournament for the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center.
Darrell Berger grew up a few miles outside of Toledo, Ohio, and attended Vanderbilt University. He is a Unitarian Universalist minister, having served churches in North Carolina, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey. From 1979 through 1992, he wrote book reviews and a column for Baseball Hobby News. Darrell is a tour guide at the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center on the campus of Montclair State University and is a founding member of the Elysian Fields chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research. He lives in Jersey City. This is his first book.
