As one of America’s most respected baseball writers and journalists, Jayson Stark has been fascinated by our national pastime throughout his life. By the time he was in middle school, he had fallen in love with the game and dreamed of making it his life’s work—not as a player, but as a sportswriter. After more than three decades of covering baseball and the people who make it great, it has never felt like work to Stark. He brings together the best of his writings into one fine collection in his new book Wild Pitches: Rumblings, Grumblings, and Reflections on the Game I Love.
After 21 years of following the ups and downs of the Phillies for the Philadelphia Inquirer — including the team’s first World Series triumph in 1980—Stark moved to ESPN in 2000. There he has cemented his place as one of the game’s most admired and influential voices; as his ESPN colleague points out, Jayson is the writer other baseball writers go to for perspective and guidance. From lighthearted pieces on the home run derby to “big picture” features on the future of the game, he has become a master of the form and includes these sports journalism gems in Wild Pitches:
At times poignant, at times whimsical and laugh-out-loud funny, Wild Pitches gathers the best of Jayson’s writing from the new millennium. The result is a unique and unforgettable collection sure to entertain and enlighten any baseball fan willing to think outside the box.
