Overview
Finally, here is a biography of Stan Musial that is worthy of the player himself. The author, who grew up in Musial's hometown, has spent years researching the slugger's life and career. The result is a biography broad in scope and deep in analysis. Stan the Man details not only the personality and the accomplishments of the man but artfully examines Musial's life against the backdrop of the Great Depression (which the already-impoverished Musial family endured), race and integration, and the tragedy that struck his hometown of Donora, Pennsylvania, and claimed many lives, including ultimately his father's. The slew of never-before-published material and revealing anecdotes gained through numerous exclusive interviews with former classmates, relatives, friends, teammates, and contemporaries allow this book to shed fresh light on the legendary Musial while making the book a must-read for all baseball fans.

Stan "the Man" Musial grew up during the Great Depression in Donora, Pennsylvania-a steel mill town in the Monongahela Valley. The Musials were a poor family and one of Stan's first baseballs was a cloth-covered rock. From such humble beginnings came one of the best players ever to grace the diamond.
In the new biography Stan the Man: The Life and Times of Stan Musial, author Wayne Stewart tells the story of a young man who was considered to be a "baseball prodigy" by the age of 15. Two years later, his life would forever be changed when the St. Louis Cardinals offered him the opportunity to join their minor league circuit.
Stewart truly put together the ultimate biography on Musial, shedding even more light on the Cardinal legend's many remarkable accomplishments, including:
- His career-long commitment to the Cardinal organization, where he played from 1941-1963
- Taking a year off from baseball to serve his country in World War II in 1945
- Retiring with 17 big-league records, 29 National League bests and nine All-Star records
- Easily surpassing the 3,000-hit club with 3,630 hits
- Becoming one of only four players to have finished among the top 20 in career homers, RBIs and batting average
Stewart leaves no stone unturned in this enlightening and comprehensive biography, revealing rare stories from both on and off the field and interviews with a myriad of people close to Musial that have never before been told. Stan the Man: The Life and Times of Stan Musial is a must-read not only for passionate Cardinals fans, but for all baseball enthusiasts who want to become better historians of the game.
