Author Biography

Gary Matthews is a former professional baseball player who spent 16 seasons in the majors with the San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and Seattle Mariners. He was the NL Rookie of the Year in 1973 and MVP of the 1983 NL Championship Series. He is currently a television analyst for the Philadelphia Phillies. He lives in Chicago. Scott Lauber is the Phillies' beat writer for the Wilmington News Journal. His work has appeared in Sports Illustrated, and he won an Associated Press Sports Editors Award in 2005.

About the Authors:
Gary Matthews is known around baseball as "Sarge" because of his habit of saluting the fans in the left-field bleachers at Wrigley Field. Matthews spent 16 seasons in the majors with the San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and Seattle Mariners. He was the NL Rookie of the Year in 1973 and MVP of the 1983 NL Championship Series. Presently, he's a television analyst for Phillies games. He lives in Chicago with his wife, Sandra, and has five children: sons Gary Jr., Delvon, Dustin, and Dannon, and daughter Paige.

Scott Lauber is a New Jersey native and Boston University graduate who just completed his third season as the Phillies' beat writer for the Wilmington News Journal. Previously, he covered the New York Mets' minor league system for the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin. His work has appeared in Sports Illustrated,  and he won an Associated Press Sports Editors award in 2005.
