Overview

This biography of Joe Paterno by his son Jay is an honest and touching look at the life and legacy of a beloved coaching legend. Jay Paterno paints a full picture of his father's life and career as well as documenting that almost none of the horrific crimes that came to light in 2012 took place at PennState. Jay Paterno clear-headedly confronts the events that happened with cool facts and with passion, demonstrating that this was just one more case of an innocent man convicted by the media for a crime in which he had no part. Noting that the scandal itself was but a short moment in Joe Paterno's life and legacy, the book focuses on Paterno's greatness as a father and grandfather, his actions as a miraculous coach to his players, and his skillful dealings with his assistant coaches. A memorial to one of the greatest coaches in college football history, the book also reveals insightful anecdotes from his son and coaching pupil.

For people around the world football fans and non football fans alike, the name Joe Paterno is unjustly linked to scandal. What many fail to recall is the career of one of the greatest college football coaches of all time. As head coach of Penn State from 1966 to 2011, Paterno lead the team to five undefeated seasons, two national championships and received the honor of being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2007. One scandal fueled by constant media attention obscured many of these accomplishments, and in just one moment the memory of a man was altered.

Written by Jay Paterno, son of Joe Paterno, Paterno Legacy: Enduring Lessons from the Life and Death of My Father (Triumph Books, September 2014) documents a life beyond scandal focusing on the legacy of a great educator, coach, father and grandfather. Jay does not ignore the scandal that overshadowed his father’s accomplishments, but instead directly confronts it with unbiased facts of Paterno’s life. Jay focuses on JoePa’s life and legacy as a coach and family man, including:

  • An in-depth look into the strategy and skill behind one of the greatest coaches in college football history
  • Joe’s role in pushing for diversity both on the football field and within Penn State University
  • Personal anecdotes of a man who as a coach became a father figure to so many
  • The role the media played in convicting an innocent man through ongoing media attention
  • Documenting that almost none of the horrific crimes that came to light in 2012 took place at Penn State

It is an epic saga of a big life that left life lessons in its rise and to its end. Whether you are a fan of Joe Paterno’s coaching or simply curious as to the events surrounding the scandal, Paterno Legacy: Enduring Lessons from the Life and Death of My Father, is a must read for all college football fans that communicates a side of the scandal that was largely ignored.
