Mark and Me:
Mark McGwire and the Truth Behind Baseball's Worst-Kept Secret
By Jay McGwire

As Mark McGwire's younger brother, Jay McGwire had a front-row seat to the ups and downs of the slugger's storied and now controversial career. He played an integral role in helping Mark recover from injuries and turn into a stronger ballplayer to become baseball's home run king.

In his tell-all book Mark and Me: Mark McGwire and the Truth Behind Baseball's Worst-Kept Secret, Jay McGwire describes how steroids took control of his life in his pursuit of becoming a professional bodybuilder. During that time, Jay witnessed his brother's body begin to break down in the early 1990s. Fearing that Mark might be forced to retire at the age of 31 due to multiple injuries, he felt compelled to help his brother recover from them by introducing him to steroids that would extend Mark's career and make him a better, stronger and more durable player.

In Mark and Me, Jay McGwire goes into great detail about his own life and his relationship with Mark, including:

• How he convinced Mark to start using steroids and HGH in 1994
• The rigorous workout programs that he put on Mark and various steroids used to help speed the recovery from injuries and build lean muscle mass
• Jay's reaction to Mark's press conference affirming his steroid use
• Jay's accident as a young teen that left him blind in one eye
• How Jay began using steroids in 1989 with the hopes of becoming a professional bodybuilder
• Why he was surprised to learn that Mark used steroids for a few weeks in 1989 and why Jose Canseco's claims don't make sense
• How steroids and alcohol contributed to Jay's life spiraling out of control until finding God saved him from total self-destruction

Jay McGwire leaves no stone unturned while discussing his addiction to steroids, his complete self-denial of abusing them and utter neglect of the possible long-term consequences. After finally cleaning up his life, getting married and starting a family, Jay had a falling out with Mark in 2002 which he shares in Mark and Me.

Through all of the trials and tribulations with his own life and relationship with his brother, Jay McGwire decided to set the record straight and does exactly that in Mark and Me. It is a book that is a must-read for anyone who wants to go behind the scenes with the McGwire family and learn family secrets that went untold until now.
