Overview

With a trademark powerful stride amid a blaze of red and yellow silks, Justify emphatically crossed the finish line at the 2018 Belmont Stakes and became just the 13th winner of horse racing's elusive Triple Crown. One of the most charismatic and talented runners in the history of the sport, Justify was also one of its most unlikely champions; the late-blooming chestnut colt made his competitive debut only 111 days prior to that legendary victory. In Justify: 111 Days to Triple Crown Glory, veteran scribe Lenny Shulman (BloodHorse magazine) provides an insider account of this Thoroughbred's rise to greatness. Through extensive interviews and first-hand accounts, readers will discover the fascinatingly disparate cast of characters who were crucial to Justify's success, including trainer Bob Baffert, whose innate ability to identify equine talent also produced American Pharoah; Mike Smith, the 52-year-old jockey asserting himself in the miraculous third act of his career; and breeders John and Tanya Gunther, who believed in Justify's ability despite the developmental imperfections that drove buyers away. Packed with riveting action, keen insight, and behind-the-scenes perspectives on quieter figures like silent investors, international stakeholders, and unheralded training staff, Justify is an illuminating look at the modern Thoroughbred industry and an essential story for the ages.

Horse racing prides itself on its history. It is the Sport of Kings, a sport with an established tradition, iconic names, marquee events and memorable characters. In 2018, a Thoroughbred named Justify rewrote that history.

In Justify: 111 Days to Triple Crown Glory (Triumph Books, April 30, 2019), award-winning writer and BloodHorse editor Lenny Shulman explores Justify’s unprecedented run to the Triple Crown. Justify never raced as a two-year-old, didn’t have the foundation experts thought necessary for sustained success, overcame a bruised foot and faced a variety of track conditions during his remarkable run. In the end, none of it mattered. More than a century of racing trends and accepted logic couldn’t stand in the way of Justify’s rise to the Triple Crown. His accomplishments stand alone, and Shulman captures the magic of his unforgettable year in this great new title. Highlights include:

  • A heartfelt foreword from veteran racing writer Steve Haskin outlining Justify’s achievements and discussing the Thoroughbred’s legacy
  • Insights from the breeders who raised a young Justify, and why potential buyers weren’t sold on the colt’s value
  • Extensive interviews and profiles of the key players in Justify’s story, including trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Mike Smith
  • Behind-the-scenes looks at all of Justify’s competitive races, including each leg of the Triple Crown

Justify captures the excitement of the most engaging and memorable horse in modern racing memory. In just 111 days, Justify went from an untested colt to a legend the likes of which horse racing had never seen. Shulman’s expertise and illuminating prose bring the story of Justify to life in a great new title that belongs in any serious fan’s library.
