Johnny U and Me:

The Man Behind the Golden Arm

By John Unitas Jr. with Edward L. Brown

Foreword by Raymond Berry

“His life story, like his football career, is one out of Horatio Alger. What he represents to football and to America, epitomizing the ‘kid from the other side of the tracks,’ sounds the part of fiction, but everything about Johnny U is real and authentic.”

– Jack Kemp, AFL and NFL quarterback

Johnny Unitas is arguably the finest quarterback in NFL history. Holding the record for the most consecutive games with a TD pass for 52 years and the NFL’s MVP in 1959, 1964 and 1967, Unitas set the gold standard for QB’s to follow. Written by John Unitas Jr. with Edward L. Brown, Johnny U and Me: The Man Behind the Golden Arm (Triumph Books, October 2014) reveals a compelling inside look into Johnny’s life on and off the field.

Covering more than just the career of a great player, Johnny U and Me details the character and conviction behind a tough, yet quiet leader who thrived on the pressure of the game. Spending most of his career with the Baltimore Colts, Johnny proved himself to be an invaluable player with his unmatched arm strength, accuracy and durability thus winning him the nickname “The Golden Arm.” Johnny U and Me is filled with personal anecdotes and details of his career, including:

  • Dispelling the overblown “rags-to-riches” myth of Johnny’s childhood in Pittsburgh
  • The importance he placed on interacting with fans and his largely unpublicized work with children’s hospitals
  • His ongoing personal struggles off the field including his failed first marriage and estrangement from his children

For all who are fans of Johnny or simply have an interest in learning more about NFL history, Johnny U and Me is the perfect book that offers an inside view into the life of the man with the Golden Arm.
