Overview

“Basketball gave me a life; Parkinson’s taught me how to live it.”
—Brian Grant

After 12 years of playing basketball at the highest professional level, Brian Grant could have been forgiven for thinking that the hardest part of his life was behind him, that he’d be able to kick back and enjoy the fruits of his considerable labors.

But soon after his retirement from the NBA, Grant was diagnosed with Young-Onset Parkinson’s disease, ushering in a challenge greater than any he’d faced before, as well as an opportunity to embrace what really matters.

With esteemed basketball writer Ric Bucher, Grant shares his story in raw and candid fashion, as he takes readers to Sacramento, Portland, Miami, and beyond; to the airplane 30,000 feet in the air where he first came to understand the source of the tremors in his hand; and to the summit of Mount St. Helens alongside five others with PD, where he once again put himself to the test and defied expectations.

In Rebound, Grant shares his remarkable life before, during, and after those NBA years with no shortage of compassion and wit.

There aren’t many careers in which Brian Grant’s 6’ 9”, 254-pound frame is considered undersized. For 12 years, Grant held his ground against bigger, stronger competition as an NBA center, outworking his opponents no matter the toll on his body. With five teams and 14 surgeries on his resume, Grant called it a career and looked forward to giving his body the rest it deserved, but would never experience. Soon after his retirement, a diagnosis of Young-Onset Parkinson’s Disease would put Grant’s mental and physical resolve to the test.

In Rebound: Soaring in the NBA, Battling Parkinson’s, and Finding What Really Matters (Triumph Books, April 6, 2021), Grant shares his remarkable story of perseverance and transformation. Along with esteemed sportswriter Ric Bucher, Grant explores the challenges and joys of his NBA career, coming to terms with the life-altering diagnosis of an incurable disease and how his worldview has evolved as he embraces the truly meaningful aspects of life. Highlights include:

  • Insights and anecdotes from a generation of NBA basketball, including working out for Jerry West, playing under Pat Riley and what it’s like to defend Shaquille O’Neal
  • Coping with the shock of Parkinson’s, overcoming depression, searching for naturopathic solutions in Dominica and enduring the burden the disease takes on family life
  • Defying expectations: how Grant and five others with PD took on the challenge of hiking to the summit of Mt. Saint Helens
  • Reflections on how Grant sees the world differently, with thoughtful examinations on family, mortality and the value of focusing on what life with PD offers, rather than what it takes away

Rebound offers a stark, honest and engaging account of the highs and lows of Grant’s life. Grant and Bucher seamlessly weave humor and pathos, capturing the inner drive that fueled Grant’s journey to the NBA and continues to push him in his mission to live life to the fullest.
