WFAN, or "The Fan," was a pioneer in 24-hour all-sports radio. The station began broadcasting its underdog concept in New York in 1987, thanks to a few men with a shared dream. Setting the standard for sports radio with innovative programming-20-20 Sports Flashes, unforgettable personalities, live games and a format that functioned like a general interest talk show-WFAN proved that sports radio could be profitable and entertaining.
Telling the story of WFAN for the first time, Imus, Mike and the Mad Dog, & Doris from Rego Park: The Groundbreaking History of WFAN (Triumph Books, November 2013) by seasoned sports journalist Tim Sullivan is an intimate history of the trailblazing station and the passionate people behind its success, including:
• Recollections by and interviews with some of the station's most explosive and enigmatic names, including Don Imus, Mike Francesa, Chris Russo, Craig Carton, Boomer Esiason, Steve Somers, Sid Rosenberg, Howie Rose, Ian Eagle, Steve Levy, Joe Benigno, Evan Roberts, and more
• A behind-the-scenes look at the process of perfecting a blend of call-ins, guests, host chemistry, news and humor that kept New York fans tuning in all day and all night
• An examination of the fast-paced world of radio and how the station has evolved, improved and altered its programming to meet fan demand and maintain ratings
A loving but honest portrait of a beloved New York radio institution, Imus, Mike and the Mad Dog & Doris from Rego Park captures the spirit of sports radio and is a perfect keepsake for all fans of the legendary and groundbreaking station.
