Overview

Tales of a team on the edge of hysteria
A firsthand, behind-the-scenes account of the turmoil that pervaded the New York Yankee franchise in the late 1970s, this book discusses George Steinbrenner's purchase and continual rebuilding of the team—alongside a colorful cast of players and businessmen. Not merely a look at the time spent in Yankee Stadium, this chronicle also describes the team's public arguments, practical jokes, drunken excess, self-aggrandizing publicity efforts, and the ups and downs that accompanied the Yankees and George Steinbrenner through the 1970s and beyond.

In this riveting behind-the-scenes look at the Yankees' chaotic years starting in the 1970s through the late 80s, readers are treated to an explosive tell-all exploring one of the most controversial figures in baseball and his reign over an equally controversial team.

Chronicling George Steinbrenner's purchase and continual rebuilding of the team-alongside colorful players and businessmen-Damned Yankees (Triumph Books, June 2012) looks back at a time when beat writers and players traveled side by side, rubbing elbows both on and off the field. Following the team's public arguments, practical jokes, drunken excess and self-aggrandizing publicity efforts, the book delves into some of the most well-known debacles in Yankee history such as:

  • Team captain Thurman Munson's fatal plane crash in 1979
  • George Steinbrenner's particularly tyrannical year in 1982 in which he fired three managers, 5 pitching coaches, 3 hitting instructors, and 47 different players in 1982
  • Billy Martin's death in a car crash on Christmas Day in 1989
  • Steinbrenner's removal as Yankee owner by then Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent due to a $40,000 payment to known gambler Howard Spira and a lifetime ban on "The Boss"

Bringing a unique perspective to some of baseball's best known characters, Damned Yankees will have both Yankees fans and detractors alike enthralled by this insider's glance into a tumultuous time in baseball's recent past.
