Overview

A guide for sports fans on how to watch and appreciate the game of hockeyMore and more fans are watching the NHL each week, but many of them don't know exactly what they should be watching. How does an offense create shooting lanes for its best sniper? When a center breaks through and splits between two defensemen, which defender is to blame? Why does a goalie look like a Hall of Famer one week and a candidate for the minor leagues the next? This guide for sports fans on how to watch and appreciate the game of hockey takes you inside a coach's mind as he builds a roster or constructs a game plan, to the chaos of the goalie's crease, and deep into the perpetual chess match between offense and defense. Discussing topics such as what to look for when a team goes on the power play and why playing center might be the most grueling job in sports, Take Your Eye Off the Puck shows fans how to get the most out of watching their favorite sport.

Hockey is a special sport. The action is fluid, fast and furious. Every play contains nuance, complexity and individual battles all over the ice that mostly go unnoticed by casual fans. Many people simply follow the puck, and as a result they miss out on the strategy, athleticism and gamesmanship happening all over the rink.

In Take Your Eye Off the Puck (Triumph Books, November 2015) author Greg Wyshynski teaches fans how to appreciate every aspect of the game. From the locker room during pregame speeches to the front office on draft day, Wyshynski provides a detailed look to help novice and experienced fans alike gain a greater appreciation of the game they love. Highlights include:

  • An insightful foreword from NHL on NBC Analyst and former NHL All-Star Jeremy Roenick
  • Inside looks at the daily routines of players and general managers that help build winning franchises
  • Breaking down hockey's latest innovations, from advanced stats to state-of-the gear
  • What Wayne Gretzky and other legendary scorers credit for making them so effective
  • The keys to slowing down an offense…by any means necessary
  • A breakdown of goaltending techniques and their strengths and weaknesses

Take Your Eye Off the Puck is not a beginner's introduction to hockey, nor is it a technical coach’s manual.  Instead, it clearly and simply explains the intricacies and nuances that affect the outcomes of every NHL game on any given game day. After reading it, you’ll never watch hockey the same way again.
