Long before Shane Victorino gained fame as a Gold Glove center fielder, All-Star, and World Series champion with the Philadelphia Phillies, he was a precocious child on the island of Maui, frustrating teachers with his inability to sit still and tagging along with his older brother to neighborhood ball fields. Diagnosed at an early age with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, sports became an ideal outlet for Victorino's boundless energy, though at times his on-the-field outbursts threatened to overshadow his play.

He previously managed the fabled Eastern Kentucky bureau of The Louisville Courier-Journal, where he worked on a series about the state's criminal justice system that was a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize in Public Service. He started his professional writing career as a news assistant and sportswriter in the Berlin bureau of The New York Times. He is a Philadelphia native and graduate of Brown University.
