The Urban Cyclist's Survival Guide is written for cycling enthusiasts who expect to run into vehicular traffic or urban traffic patterns anywhere in the world. This book is not limited to only cyclists in the major cities. Every tip, hint, trick, and tactic can be applied to cycling anywhere - rural or urban. The Urban Cyclist's Survival Guide
By James Rubin & Scott Rowan

As gasoline prices reach record highs and one-third of Americans are considered obese, many city dwellers have made a lifestyle change that trims their expenses-and waistlines. They've traded automobiles and bus cards for bicycles. From young parents in Brooklyn with their children in protective seats and baskets laden with groceries to tech workers pedaling down Los Angeles' Sunset Boulevard, urban cycling is a growing trend.

The Urban Cyclist's Survival Guide answers the questions that commuters have when thinking about using bikes instead of car or public transportation. Authors James Rubin, a former professional athlete based in Los Angeles, and Scott Rowan, a cyclist who has logged more than 15,000 miles on Chicago's streets, share insights gleaned from riding the roads of two of America's largest cities.

Survival tactics include:

• Sharing gridlocked city streets with road-raging drivers
• Perfecting lock techniques to thwart bicycle bandits
• Fixing a flat so fast you'll make your morning meeting
• Adopting twenty-first century packing options-beyond the basket
• Selecting stylish and safe helmets and clothing

The Urban Cyclist's Survival Guide is for cycling enthusiasts who expect to run into urban traffic anywhere in the world. But this book is not only for cyclists in major cities. Every tip, hint, trick and tactic can be applied to rural and suburban as well as urban cycling. What should a cyclist do after getting hit by a car? What legal tricks do bicycle messengers use navigate city traffic? What can bicycle cops teach normal cyclists about avoiding theft? The Urban Cyclist's Survival Guide answers these questions and more, making it essential reading for commuters of all kinds.

About the Authors:
