HIS BYLINE HAS BEEN IN: The Denver Post
Adrian Dater has been The Denver Post's main hockey writer since 1995, the year he broke the story of the Quebec Nordiques' move to the Mile High City to become the Colorado Avalanche.
In addition to two hockey books, he has also written two books on the Denver Broncos and another on the Colorado Rockies (the baseball team, not the old NHL club). So, it's probably a fair statement to say the native of Barre, Vt., can hit to all fields as a sportswriter.
Growing up as a diehard fan of all four Boston sports teams and reading the Boston Globe of the 1970s proved a good training ground.
"As a real little kid, Batman and walruses were the only things I cared about. But when I was around 7 or 8, it was sports and sports only," Dater says. "The Sawx, B's, C's and Pats—it was all that mattered. I still remember the excited feeling I'd get the morning after a victory by one of my teams, when I'd bike down to the store to buy the Boston Globe and read the stories by some of the greatest sportswriters ever. I always dreamed that one day I'd see my own name in a byline in the paper, and to do that in a great city like Denver is a real privilege."
To be able to write about some of the players he grew up watching on TV—such as Broncos quarterback Craig Morton in Then Morton Said to Elway—"is still a surreal thought," Dater said. "I mean, I was 12 years old, watching him in the Super Bowl in that bright orange Broncos jersey. Thirty years later, I'm sitting down with him talking about it all for a book. I still can't believe it."
