When the T formation became the standard offense in the NFL in the 1940s, one man was elevated to a greater position of importance than any other on the field: the quarterback. A few years later in 1950, two-platoon football was made permanent, allowing the quarterback to focus solely on offense without also having to play defensive back on the other side of the ball. Since then, 338 men have started at least 10 NFL games. Quarterback Abstract brings them all together along with 27 other significant pre-1950 passers to answer three questions about each quarterback: Who was he? What was his playing style? How good was he? Each quarterback is rated from one-half to 5 stars, with five given only to the greatest Hall of Fame–caliber players. Each player’s basic statistical career totals are supplied both for the regular season and the postseason, along with each quarterback’s won-lost record, and his fourth-quarter comebacks. A relative passer rating is provided to accurately compare the players across the game’s history. An appendix lists the records of those quarterbacks who started fewer than 10 games as well as several forgotten early quarterbacks from the 1940s.
Quarterback Abstract
The quarterback has been the pivotal position since the 1940s, when the T formation became the sport’s standard configuration. Since 1950, 339 men have started at least 10 games at the position. Quarterback Abstract: The Must-Have Ratings Guide for NFL Quarterbacks by John Maxymuk has gathered them all, along with 27 notable pre-1950 QBs.

Each quarterback’s statistical information is presented, from his scoring totals to his draft status and personal information. Author John Maxymuk has devised a sophisticated rating system that compares the quarterbacks across the decades. Who were they? What were their playing styles? How good were they? A full spectrum of numerical data is presented, from passing and rushing data to fourth-quarter game-winning-drive totals and won-lost records. Maxymuk also provides incisive analysis and interesting anecdotes, fleshing out each field general’s personality.

-Was Brett Favre better in Green Bay than Bart Starr?
-Who’s the best quarterback playing today - Peyton Manning or Tom Brady – or someone else?
-Is Joe Namath overrated?
-Who are the five quarter backs most similar to John Elway? To Fran Tarkenton?
-Who’s the worst play-caller ever to have won the Super Bowl? How does your favorite rate?

Packed with more than 70 top-10 lists and sure to inspire nostalgia as well as argument, this illustrated volume is the most complete record of NFL quarterbacks ever assembled, providing detailed portraits of the hundreds of men to have played the position.
