When the Tigers roared, only Ernie Harwell's smooth southern voice could be heard above the din. After 42 years as the Voice of the Detroit Tigers, Harwell retired after the 2002 season. The only play-by-play broadcaster to cover games in seven decades, Harwell has seen (and has a story about) everyone from Babe Ruth to Ichiro Suzuki.
IN MEMORIAM: ERNIE HARWELL, 1918-2010
We here at Triumph Books would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Ernie's wife, Lulu, and to his family. Many of us got to know Ernie very well when we published ERNIE HARWELL: MY 60 YEARS IN BASEBALL with Tom Keegan. Even though he was an icon to millions of baseball fans everywhere and had one of the most recognizable voices in the sports world, Ernie made everyone feel welcome and at ease, like seeing a favorite uncle or cousin at a reunion. Ernie felt like family and treated everyone as a friend. We are honored to have had the chance to work with him when we did. And when we did he enriched our lives with his warmth and the genuine interest he took in other people. Ernie will be greatly missed.
