|
Ernie Harwell, the acclaimed Tigers broadcaster whose eloquence and kindness made him a beloved Michigan institution, died on May 4th, 2010 after a nearly yearlong bout with cancer. He was 92. Harwell had one of the longest runs by a broadcaster with one major league club, calling Tigers games for 42 seasons. For the first 32 of those seasons, he made and cemented his legacy by doing play-by-play on the radio. His southern voice - rich and authoritative but not overbearing - became as distinctive to Michigan listeners as baseball itself. Triumph partners with the Detroit Free Press to commemorate the life of this broadcasting icon who so moved Detroit Tiger fans for over 4 decades in Ernie: Our Voice of Summer. more info

| May 03, 2010: | schmidt's quiet hand in 2008 phillies title | ![]() |

Philadephia Phillies have more to thank Mike Schmidt for than they may realize. Schmidt became a Hall of Fame third baseman in the 1970s and 80s thanks to his home-run swing and gold-glove defense, helping the Phillies win their first World Series championship in 1980. But it was in the stretch run of the 2008 season that Schmidt's contributions won over a new generation of fans. Phillies fans will learn many things they never previously knew about Schmidt in MIKE SCHMIDT: THE PHILLIES' LEGENDARY SLUGGER by Rob Maddi, including how he helped inspire the Phillies to their second World Series title in 2008. Late in that season, the Phillies were struggling and facing a key series agasint the New York Mets. Always supportive of his team, Schmidt emailed Philadephia manager Charlie Manuel an impassioned message to the players that included, among other pointers, Schmidt's opinion that "the Mets know you're better than they are. They remember last year [Mets lost a seven-game lead with 17 games left in season]. You guys are never out of a game. Welcome the challenge that confronts you this weekend. You are the stars. Good luck." Manuel posted the email in the locker room for everyone to read. The team took Schmidt's directive to heart, plowing through the rest of the regular season before defeating Tampa in five games for the franchise's second World Series championship. To learn more about the countless stories fans will learn about Schmidt's life and career please go to the official page for MIKE SCHMIDT.

"I read the book about Lou Brissie and was greatly moved by his career and heroism in the war," Campbell said in a story reported by The Augusta (Georgia) Chronicle last month. Whether you love or hate the New York Yankees, all baseball fans would agree that they would love to have Mariano Rivera coming out of the bullpen to save the game for their team. But if Rivera pitched in the major leagues in a previous generation there's a good chance that nobody would even know who he was. That's because the role of the closer in baseball didn't exist 50 years ago, it barely came into existence 30 years ago, and only in the past two decades has the role has been truly refined to its current status as one of the most important positions in baseball. FIREMAN: THE EVOLUTION OF THE CLOSER IN BASEBALL by Fran Zimniuch examines the creation of this unique position and how the development of the closer has changed baseball forever. Lee Smith, Goose Gossage, Fergie Jenkins, Dennis Eckersley, and dozens of other players, coaches, managers, and front-office executives all contributed to FIREMAN, providing fans a historic and captivating examination of pitching in Major League Baseball.

|

The translation of Memories of Yankee Stadium into Japanese inspired the production of a widely-viewed and critically-acclaimed documentary about the historic ballpark which aired on Japanese television three times in December. “This show owes very much to your book in terms of inspiration,’’ director Hideo Nakamura told Pitoniak in a recent e-mail. The documentary, titled “Yankee Stadium on My Mind,” was produced by NHK Japan Broadcasting Corporation, the largest broadcaster in Asia. Pitoniak’s book included scores of memories from people who made and witnessed history at Yankee Stadium. The documentary focused on several people highlighted by the author, including blind sportswriter Ed Lucas as well as an Upstate New York man who spread his late wife’s ashes at the ballpark. “I am proud that the show helped not only baseball fans, but also general viewers in Japan to better understand the background of American history of the 20th century,’’ Nakamura said. “Your book planted the seed for that to happen.’’ Memories of Yankee Stadium was Pitoniak’s 10th book overall and his second published by Triumph. The Rochester, N.Y.-based author wrote the The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: Heart-Pounding, Jaw-Dropping and Gut-Wrenching Moments in Buffalo Bills History in 2007.

Louis Brewster of the Daily News, was so shocked last month by the inside dirt that longtime NASCAR journalist Terry Blount offers in that Brewster made it clear this is “no ordinary fan” offering these insights. Blount “pulls no punches,” Brewster wrote. “He's a veteran newspaper reporter and is on the panel for the prestigious Driver of the Year award. He's a regular on ESPN's various networks and has covered auto racing for 15 years.” More on The Blount Report. Brewster is also quick to point out that Triumph Books is the publisher of NASCAR’s other big book of the season – “Then Tony Said to Junior …” by Mike Hembree, possibly the only other journalist to cover NASCAR as long as Blount, with 28 years to his credit. More on “Then Tony Said to Junior”.

|
In case you missed the March 2 issue of Sports Illustrated, the magazine called Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ira Berkow’s latest book, The Corporal Was a Pitcher, the “smart” read of the week (pg 20). “As told by Ira Berkow, [Lou] Brissie’s story is gripping and inspiring,” Sports Illustrated claims in its review. The Corporal Was a Pitcher is the riveting, true story of Brissie who – after being left for dead in a ditch on the battlefields of northern Italy on Dec. 7, 1944, while fighting the retreating Nazis – became a member of the 1949 American League All-Star team as a strikeout ace, hurling his heat past the likes of Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. When war surgeons told Brissie he would die if they didn’t cut off his leg, Brissie refused amputation and fought through 23 operations to return to baseball. “Brissie's story should be recommended reading for every major-leaguer,” wrote the Daily (Ill.) Herald’s Mike Imrem on Feb. 21. “Brissie just wanted to play baseball, and .. returned home with a damaged leg - and played in seven major-league seasons and the 1949 All-Star Game!” Lou Brissie and Ira Berkow will be at a book signing together on March 7 at the Philadelphia A’s Historical Society (800-318-0483) and at Books-A-Million in Augusta, GA (706-481-9090) on April 18. | Nov 01, 2008: | chicagobears.com reviews 'then ditka said to payton' | ![]() |

Mongo nearly lost his starting job to his Great Dane, Mike Ditka's harangues forced former quarterback Mike Tomczak to see a therapist, and if you were lucky to sleep through the night in training camp that simply meant that Walter Payton was waiting one more day to toss firecrackers in your room at 2 a.m. If there's a team more fit for a Hollywood screenplay, save your breath trying to convince Dan Jiggetts, author of "Then Ditka Said To Payton." For seven years Jiggetts was a Chicago Bears offensive lineman, blocking for Payton on his way to the Hall of Fame. Along the way, Jiggs became a fan favorite for his colorful radio and television work. This week, the Chicago Bears' official site reviewed "Then Ditka Said to Payton" and the accompanying audio CD that gives fans some of the greatest moments and stories from behind the scenes, like Payton's historic 275-yard performance against the Minnesota Vikings in 1977. "If somebody wanted to make a movie [about the Chicago Bears' players], it would be a fabulous one, I could tell you that," Jiggetts told www.chicagobears.com. "I just felt it was time to tell some of the stuff that maybe people haven’t heard and some of the great stories about the team."
| Oct 31, 2008: | caddie confidential allows fans | ![]() |

Sleeping half of a dozen grown men to a hotel room may sound like the start to a college spring break story, but it was also the reality of caddying in golf for decades. Most fans see the big money in the sport today thanks to Tiger Woods, but before the million-dollar purses, caddies slogged their way from tournament to tournament, scraping their way through a professional existence that allowed them to be at the epicenter of golf's biggest moments, but with barely enough money for gas. Greg Martin, author of Caddie Confidential: Great Golf Stories from the PGA Tour and a caddie on the PGA Tour for nearly a quarter of a century, reveals to the world how this mysterious profession once reserved for alcoholics, drug addicts and high school dropouts, has evolved into a vital role in one of the most popular sports in the world. What does a caddy really do and how can a person land that job? Which pro tips the best on the tour? What is caddying really like? "As soon as Sunday night came in Los Angeles, four of us would jump in a car and bust our asses on Interstate 10. Stops were only allowed to pee, eat, and get gas," Martin writes in Caddie Confidential. "We’d get no sleep or shower and pull into Miami on Tuesday morning ready to go. Now we’re a little more spoiled. We can actually fly from event to event. The money has changed the Tour in some other major ways. There’s been a huge influx of the Johnny-Come-Lately caddies who are friends or relatives of the player. They’re the “MCI” caddies (on the friends and family plan). Players don’t have as much fun as they used to. They walk around like robots now. They have the latest equipment, the most advanced technological gadgets; they’re burdened down with all these little gimmicks to make them ‘better.’ One equipment guy tried to sell me a tool for finding elevation. I told him that I’d been playing that hole for 25 years." Caddie Confidential will be available everywhere books are sold spring 2009.
| Oct 30, 2008: | the rise of barack obama | ![]() |
|
For 20 years Triumph Books has published some of the best coffee table books on every subject and that tradition continues in The Rise of Barack Obama with photos and text by Pete Souza. On assignment for the Chicago Tribune, veteran photojournalist Pete Souza began documenting Barack Obama's ascendancy with exclusive behind-the-scenes photographs of the senator's first year in office. Souza's coverage continued for the next two years, encompassing trips to seven countries including Russia, Azerbaijan, South Africa and Kenya. When Senator Obama began his long-shot campaign for the presidency, Souza was again backstage in early 2007 and eventually followed the senator during the early months of his campaign. These candid photographs, documenting the crucial years in the remarkable ascendancy of this once-in-a-generation politician, reveal not just the political, but also the personal side of Senator Obama, showing why he has attracted such a large and diverse following of people responding to his message of hope and change.

Our discussion of Ditka for President may be in jest, but Triumph Books is proud to have a few very serious political books for this voting season. Obama: The Essential Guide to the Democratic Nominee edited Naftali Bendavid and the staff of the Chicago Tribune and McCain: The Essential Guide to the Republican Nominee by Mark Silva and the staff of the Chicago Tribune are two separate titles that present detailed biographies and examinations of the events in each candidtate's life and the core issues that have formed their political development. Obama: The Essential Guide to the Democratic Nominee reveals the man behind the campaign. Obama burst onto the national scene just four years ago, and many Americans are still getting to know him. The Chicago Tribune has been writing about Obama for more than a decade, and more than anyone else, Tribune journalists are equipped to tell voters what they need to know about him. McCain: The Essential Guide to the Republican Nominee offers the American voter a complete picture of the Replublican nominee, from this beginning as a rebellious third-generation Naval Academy graduate; to his painful years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam; to his remarkable Washington career. In this book, you will discover why McCain called himself the "Punk" and why, despite being an ardent supporter of the war in Iraq, he vows that he'd "rather lose a campaign than lose a war."

For just the second time since 1993, the Philadelphia Phillies have reached the postseason—and they don’t look to be satisfied with just getting there. Phillies Confidential: The Untold Inside Story of the 2008 Season by Gary Matthews and Scott Lauber takes baseball fans inside the Phillies dugout and clubhouse to see how the National League East division-winners pulled off an incredible regular season, which culminated with a come-from-behind pennant stretch run to overtake longtime adversary the New York Mets on the final day of the regular season, and its surge into the playoffs. Matthews, a Phillies’ television analyst, was with the team back in 1983 when they last won the World Series and he’s chronicled his observations and inside knowledge about what’s really going on in the Phillies clubhouse and front office to make the team streak in September as they did to clinch their postseason berth. “Sarge was the first guy we thought of when it came time to considering a book on the Phillies,” said Scott Rowan, Acquisition and Product Development Manager for Triumph Books, referring to Matthews’ long-time moniker. “He played in Philadelphia for the last World Series title. The Cubs may have missed out on reaching the World Series – again! – but Cubs fans have something to still look forward to in the coming months. Chicago Tribune award-winning columnist Melissa Isaacson will write the first biography to be published on Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella. Sweet Lou: Lou Piniella: A Life in Baseball will clearly highlight the back-to-back playoff appearances the Cubs made in 2008 and '07, guided by Piniella, which are the team's first since 1907 and 1908. But baseball fans everywhere will learn how Piniella has developed into one of the best minds in the game. From his watercooler-bashing days as a two-time world champion New York Yankee; to managing the Cincinnati Reds to a wire-to-wire season and World Series victory; to building a moribund Seattle Mariners into one of the best baseball teams in history; to laying the foundation in his hometown of Tampa for the success the Rays are enjoying now, Piniella is one of baseball's true characters and true winners. "Tracing the life and career of Lou Piniella has been a true adventure and one of the most fulfilling writing projects I have taken on," Isaacson said. "On a Yankees club featuring some of the most colorful characters in the game, Piniella pulled off the near-impossible as both a team leader as well as a respected friend and confidante to George Steinbrenner, Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson. He took on Marge Schott, advanced his career and lived to tell about it. He was sued by an umpire. He wrestled with his pitcher. But more than that, he has endured as one of the most popular and successful men in baseball. It's an honor to tell his story." Sweet Lou: Lou Piniella: A Life in Baseball will be in bookstores everywhere by Spring Training.

Come on, Bobby Valentine gets kicked out of a game and comes sneaking back in with a fake mustache and glasses? Who does that? It was the definition of outrageous, but nothing like the things many stars like A-Rod and Manny Ramirez did that fans may have forgotten. The New York Mets may have lost out on reaching the playoffs for the second time in as many seasons, but the team is still important enough to have two upcoming books published revolving around the 2008 historic season: and So Long, Shea and Shea Good-Bye. So Long, Shea: Five Decades of Stadium Memories by Triumph Books will offer Mets fans everywhere a special commemorative keepsake book that allows them to relive the greatest moments in Shea Stadium’s history. When Walter J. Shea Memorial Stadium opened April 17, 1964, no one, not even big-thinking New Yorkers, could have predicted the extraordinary series of events that would unfold there over the next 44 years. From a memorable first decade that culminated in the most amazin’ Mets team of all time led by the indomitable Tom Seaver [this is arguable, since many consider the 86 mets to be the best], to the birth of the Jets and the emergence of Broadway Joe, to concerts which included the Beatles among a Who’s Who list of rock-and-rollers that have played there through the years, to pugilists, a Pope, and the star-crossed 1986 World Series champion Mets, Shea proved a most worthy venue for a city steeped in center stages. So Long, Shea will be available in bookstores everywhere in November 2008. Keith Hernandez On The 2008 Mets' Problems What REALLY happened to the 2008 New York Mets? Known as much for his personal battles off the ice as he was for the physical on-ice battles he never shied away from, Theo Fleury was one of the greatest personalities to ever play professional hockey and for the first time, tells his complete life story in his highly anticipated autobiography, due out from Triumph Books next fall. The yet-to-be-titled autobiography goes into territory no other book about Fleury has ever covered. Fleury discusses his multiple suspensions from the NHL for substance abuse problems, what drove him to battles with alcohol and drugs, and how he has refocused his life to deal with those on-going problems that forced an early end to his NHL career. “Hockey fans all love to hear locker room stories, especially from a tough guy like Theo,” said Scott Rowan, Acquisition & Product Development Manager for Triumph Books. “But we wanted to publish Theo’s story because non-sports fans have something to learn from it too. Theo’s problems with alcohol and drugs have nothing to do with the fact that he’s one of the greatest hockey players ever. When it comes to chemical addition problems, it doesn’t matter if you’re a professional athlete or fan, it’s a serious problem to deal with. We felt strongly that if Theo was willing to share his personal story with the world in order to help anyone with similar problems, we were going to work with him to share that message.” Fleury’s book is scheduled for release in fall 2009. "I think that people need to understand why. What it was that made me do what I did. I knew I was crazy insane and so did everyone else," Fleury writes. "I didn’t hang out on the surface. I would go five, six, seven, eight levels below the streets of New York and party with people I didn’t know. Freaks, transvestites, all kinds of shady people. Or I’d be walking home from a game dressed in my custom made suit from Giovanni’s in Montreal and I’d stop and buy three or four bottles of wine. Then I’d head for the Chelsea Piers between 23rd Street and the Hudson River and hang with homeless guys around a burn barrel shooting the sh*t. I would ask them how they got there. I’ve always been interested by that kind of stuff. The Rangers must have been sh**ting bricks." At just 5-foot-6, Fleury established himself in NHL history as one of the best little men to ever take the ice by overcoming persistent questions about his size in scoring 30 goals or more eight times in his career. Coming in from the right wing, Fleury’s combination of attacking skill and physical play earned him seven All-Star game nominations during his career with the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Chicago Blackhawks, and New York Rangers before finishing his career playing one season with the Belfast Giants in Europe after his last NHL suspension for substance abuse problems. Triumph Books and American Media, Inc., the parent company for Muscle & Fitness Magazine and Muscle & Fitness Hers, announce that they are extending their partnership on fitness titles into 2009 with two more brand new titles – 101 Fat-Burning Workouts & Diet Strategies and 101 Fat-Burning Workouts & Diet Strategies For Women. Both titles will be available in stores and online everywhere in January 2009, just in time for everyone's New Year's Resolutions. The print run will be in range of 100,000 combined units. 101 Fat-Burning Workouts & Diet Strategies and 101 Fat-Burning Workouts & Diet Strategies For Women follows the two titles that Triumph Books and AMI partnered with in 2008 – 101 Workouts and 101 Workouts for Women. “Triumph Books is fortunate to have such a great partner as Muscle & Fitness Magazine and Muscle & Fitness Hers,” said Triumph Books president Mitch Rogatz. “We thought the first two titles we worked together on were great and the response from the marketplace only supported our initial thoughts. So it made sense for everyone, especially anyone looking to improve their health, to publish more titles that offer even more advice, this time focusing primarily on fat-burning workouts and proper eating outlines.” For more information.

| Sep 17, 2008: | first definitive piniella bio in works | ![]() |
|
Triumph Books proudly announces that award-winning journalist Melissa Isaacson will pen the first detailed biography of Chicago Cubs manager Lou “Sweet Lou” Pinella. Sweet Lou: Lou Piniella: A Life in Baseball will be available wherever books are sold in March 2009. The first print run of Sweet Lou will be in the range of 50,000 units. Isaacson was given unprecedented access to not just Piniella, but also to his family and closest friends.
"For years I felt that Lou Piniella would be the subject of a great biography because he's done so much in his career," said Triumph Books president Mitch Rogatz. "The trouble was finding the right writer to capture Sweet Lou's personality. Melissa Isaacson is without question the perfect writer for Lou's biography and the fact that it's coming on the heels of a historic Cubs season means this could be the most important Cubs book of the past 100 years." During his 38-year Major League Baseball career, Pinella has been a World Series champion as both a player (1977, '78 with New York Yankees) and manager (1990, Cincinnati Reds). But it has been his current his role as manager of the Chicago Cubs that just may prove to be the most important part of his career. It has been 100 years since the Cubs won the World Series, but under Sweet Lou's guidance the Cubs have had the best record in baseball throughout most of the 2008 season and are expected to go far in the playoffs, possibly clinching the World Series title 100 years since last doing so. Born in Tampa, Florida, Piniella played for the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals before finishing his playing days with the Yankees. He has managed the New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, Seattle Mariners and Tampa Rays before his current tenure with the Cubs. For more information.
