Overview

The legacy of the Minnesota Vikings patriarch in his own words
Minnesota sports legend Bud Grant tells the story of his remarkable life as a player and coach in this rich firsthand account. From surviving polio in childhood to a shining college sports career and playing both basketball and football professionally, and from coaching a championship-winning Canadian team to leading the Minnesota Vikings to four Super Bowls, Grant shares his personal perspective for the first time in this autobiography with entertaining detail and refreshing openness. The book recounts his experiences with star players and gives the inside story on Grant’s controversial retirement in 1983 and his return to the sideline in 1985. Minnesota sports lovers will also enjoy Grant’s reflection on his own idiosyncrasies, including his famous love of cold-weather football and banning of sideline heaters, and his postretirement life spent devoted to environmental protection and being an outdoorsman.

I Did It My Way: A Remarkable Journey to the Hall of Fame
By Bud Grant and Jim Bruton

Harry Peter "Bud" Grant, Jr. coached the Minnesota Vikings for 18 successful seasons and became one of the winningest professional football coaches of all time. His interest in sports started as a youngster, playing three sports in college and having short stints with NBA and NFL teams until he found his way to coaching. The rest is history.

Bud Grant tells his story for the first time in his autobiography, I Did It My Way: A Remarkable Journey to the Hall of Fame (Triumph Books, September 2013). With help from co-author Jim Bruton, a foreword by Grant's longtime friend Sid Hartman, beloved Minnesota sports writer and former Viking great and Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton, Grant reveals what it was like to be a coach at a time when football players weren't multi-millionaires, each head coach had one assistant coach and drafting was a subjective art based on years of experience, not a numbers game. Grant shares behind-the-scenes stories, including:

• Taking the Vikings to four Super Bowls and 11 division titles with his trademark stoic, calm on-field demeanor.
• Coming out of retirement after the disastrous Steckel era to coach for another year, and declining a previously unpublicized offer to return again as head coach of the Vikings at age 78 during the 2004 season.
• Being one of the first NFL players to become a free agent-and leaving the NFL for the CFL.
• Signing on at age 29 to coach his former teammates, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, without any prior coaching experience, and turning the team into four-time Grey Cup champions.
• Suggested rule changes that would revolutionize the NFL, including revamping field goal and extra point kicking, kickoff and punt adjustments, and adding excitement to end-of-game sequences.

Grant imparts timeless wisdom in I Did It My Way, clearly proving that he was ahead of his time despite being "old-school." His instincts about selecting talented players and ability to build a tailored style of game play focused on their strengths can be considered nothing short of genius. Perfect for football lovers and Vikings fans, I Did It My Way is the story of a true coaching pioneer and is a must-have for the 2013 season.
