Overview

The Buckeyes overcome long odds to have one of their most successful seasons ever
Ohio State University's remarkable 2012 season--and the beginning of a new era at the Big Ten school#&8212;are recalled in this fascinating account. It tells the story of Urban Meyer, who accepted the job as head coach at Ohio State just before the NCAA banned the Buckeyes from postseason play in 2012, rendering them ineligible for the Big Ten Championship and bowl games. Meyer ultimately rose to the challenge of motivating a group of players to commit to the program despite the ban, and the book recounts what turned out to be one of the most remarkable seasons in Ohio State's 123-year history. Filled with never-before-revealed details about Meyer and the 2012 season, this surprising and entertaining record provides a complete picture of the new age at Ohio State.

The Ohio State Buckeyes were in trouble: after a scandal that forced the resignation of former head coach Jim Tressel, the team was facing severe NCAA sanctions that would keep it from a spot in the 2012 Big Ten Football Championship game. Fortunately, they had Urban Meyer on their side. Meyer, a two-time BCS National Championship winning coach at Florida, motivated the Buckeyes to a perfect 12-0 record during his first year as head coach.

The definitive account of one of the most unlikely and exceptional seasons in Ohio State history, Buckeye Rebirth: Urban Meyer, an Inspired Team, and a New Era at Ohio State (Triumph Books, October 2013) by award-winning sports journalist Bill Rabinowitz, with a foreword by former Buckeyes head coach Earle Bruce, includes:

  • How Meyer used his experience and expertise to jump-start a floundering program that could have easily buckled under the pressure of sanctions
  • A detailed account of Urban Meyer's life and career before taking the Ohio State job, including how he climbed the coaching ladder to the top-and then nearly lost it all
  • Thorough depictions of leaders such as John Simon, who overcame numerous injuries until he faced one that not even he could overcome, despite herculean efforts
  • The untold personal story behind Kenny Guiton's stunning rally against Purdue
  • The story of "The Golden Door" speech before the Michigan game, details of the grueling offseason workouts that tested players' resolve, and the truly "hands-on" approach Buckeyes assistant coaches took in saving Meyer's first recruiting class.

The book is for die-hard Ohio State fans and also any reader interested in a compelling, inspiring story. Buckeye Rebirth will entertain readers with a rare look inside a football program poised to return as a national powerhouse.
